Meet Dr. Kelly Burwell

The Moment Of Truth:

Clarksville Chiropractor, Dr. Kelly BurwellAt the age of 9, I had a severe accident that may have caused me to be permanently disabled had it not been for chiropractic. I was swinging from a rope tied to a basketball goal when the rope snapped and I fell flat on my back onto the concrete driveway. The following day I awoke so dizzy that the world was spinning around me at a very fast speed. Severe nausea and vomiting were the result. No matter what I did, I was unable to find any relief other than by laying down on my right side. My mother took me to our medical doctor who prescribed a medication to stop the dizziness.

The prescription was helpful in reducing the severity of the problem. However, once the prescription ran out the vertigo immediately returned. Once again, the only relief I could get was to lie on my right side. I went through another round of drugs and another with the same results. My mom began to worry as to whether I would ever be able to stand again without medication. She began searching for another solution and then thought of her chiropractor.

The chiropractor my mother took me to was fresh out of school. He made a special effort to explain how a spine being out of line could cause the vertigo that was plaguing me. Doctor Ferrell went on to describe how every part of your body, to include every cell, is told what to do by the nerves that come from your brain, proceed down through your spinal cord, and exit out though a small opening created through the proper positioning between your vertebrae (segments of the spine). Half of that opening was created by the shape of the vertebra above and half created by the shape of the vertebra below. Proper alignment was the only way to assure maximal size of the exit opening for any nerve.

He further explained that if any one or more of those segments is out of place even slightly, pressure can be put on the nerve that may cause interference to the instructional message the nerve is delivering to the organ, muscle, or tissue. Dr. Ferrell explained that if my condition was caused by nerve interference as he had described, called a subluxation, then chiropractic treatment would help.

When Dr. Ferrell adjusted my spine, the first thing I noticed was that it did not hurt. Usually when I went to a doctor, I was always apprehensive because the medical doctor would often poke me with a needle or do some other procedure that hurt. However, this did not hurt. In fact, it felt good. My mother and I were both amazed that I was able to return to school the next day with no more dizziness and no more medication.

From Patient To Career:

I never forgot that first visit to my chiropractor. I continued care as I grew up over the next 11 years as a patient before becoming a chiropractor myself. I saw the value in Chiropractic and was effectively treated for headaches, "cricks" in the neck, mid back pain, low back pain, sciatica, cramps, and even colds and flu episodes during that time frame. I found that chiropractic treatment improved my immune system and I was not getting sick as often any more. I eventually realized that going to the chiropractor first before going to the medical doctor made more sense, was easier, and seemed to help get the right results. When it came time for me to decide on a career, the natural course of action was chiropractic for me.

Getting On The Information Highway:

After obtaining the necessary college course pre-requisites, I enrolled at Palmer College of Chiropractic. I ultimately received my Doctor of Chiropractic degree in 1991 from Palmer. While there, I met my soon-to-be husband, Dr. Larry Harris. We opened our office in Clarksville on April 12th, 1992. I am a member of the Tennessee Chiropractic Association and TNChiro.com.

My Family and Interests:

I am the very proud mother of two great children; my daughter Amelia, and my son, Colan. I am equally proud of my four stepdaughters; Natalie, Andrea, Nicole and Tiffany. My husband, our two children, and I live in the Palmyra area next to his father’s farm. We really enjoy outdoor activities and take full advantage of them. I am committed to physical conditioning and really enjoy a great work out. We are home schooling our children and live a health-oriented lifestyle every day. We both continue to be blessed through our commitment to healthier living, not only for ourselves, but for those whose lives we have the privilege of touching through our chiropractic practices.

So What’s The Big Picture?:

I employ several types of chiropractic treatment to meet the specific needs of my patients and provide relief as effectively and efficiently as possible. The Chiropractic techniques and procedures I employ are as follows: CBP (Chiropractic Biophysics) Palmer Package, Thompson, Diversified, and Activator, among others.

Our Doctor Asks some important questions of interest to Clarksville residents - Chiropractor Clarksville Our Doctor Asks...

Will chiropractic adjustments make my spine too loose?
No. Only the spinal joints that are fixated and "locked up" receive attention. The occasional spinal joint that moves too much is passed over so weakened muscles and ligaments can strengthen and heal.
How long does it take to form a bone spur?
Many who begin chiropractic care think their problem happened "last week when you bent over funny." But pictures of the spine tell a different story. Chiropractors know it can take your body years to deposit the calcium necessary to form a bone spur. It's your body's response to stress due to gravity or joint malfunction. And chiropractic care can help.
